QUESTION FOR STUDENTS

A sentence from THE FIRST VIAL reads -

"He was a popular king for he had hung, drawn and quartered the hated and vicious cuckold Mortimer, who had seduced his mother, Isabella, and contrived the ghastly murder of his father, Edward II."

How did Edward II meet his end?
What was "the ghastly murder"?

I will send a FIRST VIAL bookmark to the first five readers to submit the right answer. You answer should include the source of your information.

Post you answer in 'Comments'.

Good luck to all!

Anonymous,
The answers to your question are in the book. Keep a notepad with you while you read and jot down each new character as you go along. By the end of the book you'll be able to give a description of the characters.

On the off-chance that you reply anytime soon I'll ask... I don't understand the whole thing with Peter. I assume after he tried to kill Katherine that he was the one who set the fire as well, since he had full access to her room. However, I don't remember reading why he was in cahoots with Simon, or if he was at all, or if he was just working for his own greedy means...
Also, did you use the Ten commandments as a theme in the book? I'm working on an English project and we have to choose ten plot points, which me and my partner are having difficulty choosing plot points. As I'm good with explanations the explanations shouldn't be hard, but I must have missed something... I can't understand what Gerard has to do with anything, nor how Peter is involved... Did I miss something, or is there an explanation for that?

Hi Robyn,
You're correct. Peter had full access to Kath's room and was in cahoots with Simon, although not entirely by choice. Simon was a powerful man and men like him often force lesser men to work for them. Remember the unnamed man wo met with Simon after the foiled plan to burn Katherine? My description of the man included the phrase "rubbed bony hands over his long mournful face". This phrase was meant to trigger the reader to recall that the chamberlain, Peter, had an "over-long mournful face" and so make the connection.
We know little about Gerard except that he is the missing steward thought to be the thief who absconded with the manor account money at the beginning of the book. Because of Simon's reference to Peter's complicity in other plots against the manor, the reader may assume that Peter, either alone or with Simon, did away with Gerard and took what he had stolen.
No, I did not use the ten commandments as a theme. Please have a look at my post on 'Theme'. You may find the motif useful in determining plot points.
Hope that helps.

Jordan,
I'm afraid I probably can't remember all the characters in the book but I'll give it a go.
The main characters were Katherine and Victor. Some of the others were - Nathaniel, Father Simon, Old Henry, Nory, Benjamin, Hester, Nettie, Ciscilla, Marjorie and Rowley.

Hello Linnea. I read your book but did not understand what happend to Father Simon towards the end of the book.

Father Simon was hallucinating as he lay dying in the pit. He thought he saw an angel who was going to take him to heaven but instead it was a demon taking him to hell. He was terrified because he couldn't remember what the Church had taught him about how to stay out of hell. Hope that answers your question.

Hello Linnea. I really enjoyed your novel! I was wondering if you had a second novel to follow up? I felt like the ending was slightly quick and wish to know of the relationship of Katherine and Victor, and what happens to Katherine`s estate.

Linnea said...

Thank you Kelsey. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Sorry, but no, I haven't written a follow-up novel with these characters. I'm currently working on a novel set in ancient Babylon.

Thank you, and that sounds intriguing!
